LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The USS New Jersey, the World War II battleship whose modernized guns supported U.S. Marines in Lebanon in 1984, has a new captain -- W. Lewis Glenn Jr.
Glenn assumed command of the New Jersey in a ceremony Saturday aboard the battleship at its home port.
Capt. Richard Milligan, 49, who completed a two-year tour of duty as captain of the battleship, was promoted to the rank of commodore and will take over as comptroller of the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, Chief Lon Cabot, spokesman for the New Jersey, said.
He said the Navy routinely changes the leadership of battleships.
Under Milligan's command, the battleship and its crew of 1,500 completed a 331-day extended duty tour from June 1983 to May 1984 that included patrol off the Central American coast and the eastern Mediterranean, Cabot said.
In early 1984, the New Jersey's 5-inch guns regularly shelled the Beirut hills to support the Marine contingent in the multi-national peace-keeping force then in the area.
The battleship, which first saw service in December 1942, was the first to be outfitted with a new weapons system during the Navy's battleship modernization plan, Cabot said.
